Lesson 8Activities of the Design phase
ObjectiveDescribe the Activities of the business, creative, and technical roles in the Design Phase.

Activities of the Design Phase

As your team works through the process of developing a Web site, there are many people working on many different tasks according to a few different timelines. Someone on the team should be managing the overall progression of the work, but it is also necessary that all members of the team have a general idea about which tasks objectives fall under their purview and what activities they need to perform to achieve those objectives. Following is a breakdown of the activities of the Design phase. Keep in mind that each activity may be made up of several discrete tasks, and that on some tasks, there may be overlap on which roles contribute to which activities.

Web Team in Design phase

Click the WebTeam blueprint to define the objectives, deliverables, and activities for the team in this phase.
insert blueprint with all 3 groups hot. First 3 Phases are hot
  1. The first phase tab will be Discovery ,
  2. the second phase tab will be Definition and
  3. the third phase tab will be Design.

OBJECTIVES DELIVERABLES Activities
Support the design process and contribute business components of design documents Prepare for marketing activities during subsequent phases Statement of purpose for the project Business case for solution Audience development scheme Marketing plan
  1. Develop the business case for the solution Create a brief statement describing the overall purpose of the project, the desired user experience, and project strategies
  2. Specify how the solution is in line with the client's business goals
  3. Define the audience and create an audience development scheme
  4. Create a marketing plan, including revenue model, partnerships, advertising campaign, promotions, merchandising, and public relations

ROLE OBJECTIVES DELIVERABLES Activities
Creative Produce creative components of design documents Creative brief Editorial brief Navigational brief Creative specification for design and architecture specification Graphic elements for requirements definition Comprehensive art for design and architecture specification Develop or oversee development of creative brief, editorial brief, and navigational brief
Present and explain comprehensive art ("comps") to client Comps are usually on paper, even for Web projects Coordinate with database designer to ensure the user's display requirements can be met
Identify organizational/brand requirements and file formats Define page size and minimum user system requirements Identify editorial content
Specify the navigational model for the design and architectures specifications
Create a site map

Role OBJECTIVES DELIVERABLES Activities
Technical Produce technical components of design documents Technical components of requirements definition and design and architecture specification State technology barriers, hardware/software costs, and build-versus-buy decisions.
Define the application model requirements for the requirements definition and the design and architectures specification.
  1. Prepare the technical portions of the requirements definition and the design and architecture specification
  2. Identify security requirements, Define data connectivity solutions and data models
  3. Identify data sources, timelines, costs
  4. Create and present a data model diagram Define asset, version, and source control processes
  5. Develop quality assurance requirements, documentation standards, and test plans
  6. Specify hardware and network implementation and maintenance plans Develop a rollout plan

In the next lesson, you will study the fourth of the six phases, the Development phase.

Comparing Design Deliverables

Looking at the Nav Brief and the Requirements Definition, answer several questions about them from perspective of a creative role responsible for navigation and info arch. How is each one useful? How do the 2 documents differ?
